John Dummett, der erste DOLORES-Stipendiat, realisiert sein Projekt im lothringer13/laden als work in progress 01.09. – 30.09.06 (Termine siehe weiter lesen) Nach ersten Beobachtungen vor Ort hat der britische Künstler John Dummett sein Projekt „Standpoint“ konkretisiert: Sein Interesse gilt baulichen und skulpturalen Motiven – wie steinernen Löwen, Münchner Kindl-Wappen und anderen regionalen Architekturdetails –, die als Platzhalter für die Bevölkerung im Stadtbild stehen und den öffentlichen Raum als Raum Aller markieren. John Dummett entziffert diese Symbolik aus der Perspektive des ortsfremden, uneingeweihten Besuchers und hinterfragt, für welche Öffentlichkeit diese Räume tatsächlich gestaltet sind und welche Ausschlüsse dabei produziert werden. John Dummett baut „Props“, Kulissen oder quasi-skulpturale Objekte, und tritt über sie mit dem Publikum in Dialog. Die Ergebnisse dieses Austauschs werden in Form von Schriftzügen wiederum Teil der Installation. Im lothringer13/laden wird Dummett ein übergroßes Wappen realisieren, das repräsentative Elemente aus dem Stadtbild aufgreift. Dieses Objekt wird durch einen transparenten Arbeitsraum ergänzt, in dem Dummett mit dem Publikum Beobachtungen und Kommentare zum Thema „Öffentliche Räume in der Stadt (München)“ sammelt und diskutiert. Kulminationspunkt seines Projekts ist der off-site-day am 24. September. Für diesen Tag sind unter anderem eine Stadtführung mit John Dummett und Gespräche und Diskussionen mit Gästen wie Manuel Schwalinsky geplant.

Das DOLORES-Arbeitsstipendium ist ein gemeinsames Projekt des Künstlerateliervereins Domagk Kunstunterstützung e. V. (DOKU) in der Domagkstraße 33 und des lothringer13/laden. Die beiden Münchner Institutionen haben 2006 erstmals eine zweimonatige Residency für eine/n ausländische/n KünstlerIn ausgeschrieben. Ziel dieser Residency ist die Vernetzung von lokalen Kulturschaffenden mit internationalen KünstlerInnen, Einsicht in alternative bildnerische Strategien am Rande des ersten Kunstmarktes, sowie die temporäre Überwindung der finanziellen Exklusivität Münchens für ausländische Künstler. Zwischen dem 20. und 30. September 2006 wird das Projekt des eingeladenen Künstlers im lotringer13/laden zu sehen sein. John Dummett (GB) wurde im März unter 43 Bewerbern aus aller Welt von einer Jury Münchner Kulturschaffender ausgewählt.

Community and the public realm. Or perhaps more accurately community in the public realm, or even more accurately in terms of this project: the visible presence of the idea of community in the public spaces of the city of Munich.

But what does this opening statement mean? Well, let me put forward a proposition. A public proposition. How public space is designed, managed and used, presents a set of tacit understandings of what community is and is not. These ‘understandings’ are civil and polite, they are also vague and almost empty of meaning. Contemporary public space presents us with a place for everyone, somewhere for all of us, where questions of community and belonging have no need to be asked or considered, as we are all equally welcome.

This notion of a community for all, runs counter to the standard dictionary definition of community; “a social group whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage”. The public spaces in the city of Munich are full of indicators of a particular collective and shared identity, from lions to coats of arms, from wall paintings to vernacular architectural details. But to the uninitiated eye they cannot be read, they exist as only the public traces of a community.

This tension between what community is expected to mean and how it is visible and marked in public space, is the territory which standpoint will occupy and explore for 6 weeks through a process of prop making, writing and discussion. The project will culminate in a gallery presentation and an off site day of talks and activities.
